The Center for Diversity Education celebrates and teaches diversity in
order to foster conversation and respect among cultures. Each year
staff and volunteers at the exhibit work directly with over 17,000
students, teachers, and citizens and indirectly with another 10,000
through traveling exhibits in counties throughout western North
Carolina.

This is a one-year position that begins in May, 2010 with a
Pre-Service Orientation in Atlanta May 11-14 and a start date of May
17th. AmeriCorps*VISTA members are required to work a minimum of 35
hours per week, but are on call 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. For
their commitment to reducing poverty, they receive a living allowance
of $10,296/year, with a $5,350 education award OR a $1,500 cash
stipend paid at the end of a year of satisfactory service. They are

assistance.

The AmeriCorps*VISTA member will have the opportunity for extensive,
self-determined training to benefit them in their service year and
future goals. During a service year with the Center for Diversity
Education, there will be opportunities to create new projects and
programs that fulfill a personal passion. The work of the CDE will
create transferable skills that will be valuable in any future
endeavors as globalization continue to effect career fields. Our
office works closely with UNC Asheville and with community
collaborators, providing an excellent network for VISTA members. The
opportunity for service, training and growth over the course of the
service year is extremely beneficial for recent graduates and
professionals pursuing a career change.

Tasks and Activities include:

1. Revamp the web site to include more interactive features. The
Center posts 11 digital exhibits on the web site. A strategic goal of
this position is to transform the one dimensional pdf files into a
more interactive site. This would enable the Center to use these
exhibits as an on line learning tool vastly widening the numbers of
people who could make use of these exhibits. This might also include a
blog, reader feedback, and on line assessments.

2. Maximize use of Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking
features. The Multimedia Coordinator will evaluate the use various
options for social networking and the match them with the mission of
the Center. The choice of these systems will include the Center’s
ability to maintain them once the VISTA position is completed.

3. Explore and implement Guerilla marketing multimedia strategies that
enhance the mission of the Center. This would include creative
collaboration with other Advertising professionals along with
professors and students at the Center.

4. Create and/or direct the creation of power point presentations that
showcase the Social Entrepreneurial work of the Center. The Center is
moving into a fee for service model for some clients in the
non-academic setting as a funding stream. Training sessions with local
and regional staffs in both the profit and non-profit world is part of
the strategic plan. These sessions are enhanced by visual aids for
such programs as “How to Desegregate the Workplace”. They will also
match some of the assessment tools on the revamped web site.

5. Enhance the “laboratory model” for the Center for Diversity
Education at UNC Asheville by working with UNC Asheville interns. The
Multimedia Coordinator will develop this position as part of a
“laboratory model” at the Center which includes collaboration with
students and volunteers in the community. The goal is that once the
VISTA position is complete, student interns could continue to operate
the website and social media outlets.

6. Work with other VISTA colleagues in the ACS Foundation co-hort to
connect them, and the organizations they work with, to the Service
Learning Opportunities at UNC Asheville.
The Multimedia coordinator will intentionally provide information to
VISTA volunteers about the activities at the UNC Asheville and CDE.
The intention is that this would lead to dynamic collaborations
between community organizations and students and faculty at the
University.

1. College degree in Multimedia, Marketing, and Mass Communications,
Business or applicable field desired.
2. Excellent Web development and management skills
3. Interested and comfortable in working with people from diverse
