*SUMMARY*
The Assistant Director for Diversity and Intercultural Relations will
advance the University's commitment to a liberal arts education that will
prepare students for the lifelong quest of understanding themselves and
their development as responsible global citizens. The Assistant Director
will play a lead role in the construction of a campus climate that
appreciates and values diversity and is conducive for multicultural students
to excel academically and socially. Advise, counsel, and mentor students
with academic, career and personal objectives and act as an advocate for
multicultural student organizations and campus committees addressing
multicultural student concerns. Educate and provide programs relating to
multicultural and diversity awareness as well as acknowledge, affirm, and
advocate for underrepresented groups.
*RESPONSIBILITIES*
The Assistant Director will fulfill a number of campus life
responsibilities, and should be available for evening and weekend
involvement with student groups. The Assistant Director will work with
individuals and groups that are racially, ethnically, culturally, and
nationally diverse, and that are concerned with gender-related or sexual
orientation issues. This individual will make presentations, write reports,
and serve on university committees. The Assistant Director will serve as a
member of a team of student affairs professionals responsible for the Coates
University Center, student programming, student-edited publications, Greek
life, orientation, parent and family programs, leadership, and service.
Specific duties include:
- Chair of the Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Committee which
sponsors an annual lecture, facilitates participants in the San Antonio MLK
Jr. March and hosts other events.
- Chairs the committee for Women’s History Month and coordinates programs
in celebration of the month.
- Works in partnership with the newly formed Ruth McLean Bowman Bowers
Resource Center for Women.
- Trains and advises student organizations such as Trinity Diversity
Connection (TDC).
- Monitors the fiscal procedures and supervises the budget process for
TDC.
- Represents multicultural perspectives in the planning and delivery of
student programs, services, and initiatives with student leaders.
- Assesses the quality of the undergraduate experience and makes
recommendations to the Vice President for Student Affairs about how they
might be improved.
- Serves as a resource for Admissions, Alumni Relations, Academic Affairs
and others departments, and aids in the training of professional staff and
student peer groups.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Campus & Community
Involvement or the Vice President for Student Affairs.
- Cooperates and collaborates with other employees in the spirit of
teamwork and collegiality.

*SUPERVISION*
Meets regularly with the Director of Campus & Community Involvement to
discuss services, programs, and job performance.
Supervises the Coordinator for Community Service & Engagement. This
coordinator is a three-quarter time professional staff member, whose focus
is to develop and initiate service experiences in line with divisional
values and goals.
*QUALIFICATIONS*
Master's degree in student personnel or related field and three to six years
experience working (part-time or graduate assistant positions will be
considered). Demonstrated experience working with and sensitivity to
students with diverse cultural backgrounds including race, ethnicity and
gender is preferred. Experience creating and implementing multicultural
programs and workshops, assisting campus organizations in planning programs
that address social issues within the university community, and developing
activities to enhance all students' knowledge of ethnic cultures and
celebrations is preferred. Student Affairs experience in advising,
training, leadership education, counseling, and campus programming. An
understanding of student development theory, ability to articulate issues
and trends facing students and experience in designing and conducting
assessment activities is preferred.
Strong oral and written communication skills required. Strong interpersonal
skills and an ability to work with students, faculty, staff, and members of
the community in addition to students are required. Must possess the
ability to work in a fast-paced, multi faceted environment with frequent
student walk- ins. Must also demonstrate strong project planning, problem
solving, and decision making skills.
