Inaugural Latino conference to be held in San Bernardino
Wednesday, January 27, 2010 The Press-Enterprise
The first-ever Latino Education and Advocacy Day summit "A Day of Courageous
Conversations" will be held Monday, March 29 at Cal State San Bernardino.
The free event will be hosted by the Cal State San Bernardino's College of
Education at the Santos Manuel Student Union on campus from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Civil rights activist Sylvia Mendez will open the all-day event with the
keynote address. Mendez was involved in the 1946 desegregation case Mendez
v. Westminster, which made California the first state to end segregation in
schools, when she was 8-years-old.
Other speakers include Juan Sepulveda, director of the White House
Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans, and Delores
Huerta, president of the Dolores Huerta Foundation and co-founder of the
United Farm Workers.
Huerta will present her documentary "Viva La Causa," a look at the grape
strike and boycott led by Huerta and Cesar Chavez in the '60s. A post-film
discussion with Huerta is also planned.
The chair of the event committee is Enrique Murillo Jr., associate professor
of language, literacy and culture at Cal State San Bernardino.
Murillo was also a part of the "Handbook of Latinos and Education" which he
edited with five colleagues and will be launched at the event. The handbook
is a review of thorough, innovative and critical scholarship relevant to the
educational issues that affect Latinos.
The summit will also be shown to over 40 participating universities around
the United States, such as Harvard, Purdue and New York University, through
a webcast by LatinoGraduate.net. Town hall viewings will also be shown in
Mexico.
Attendees of the event can also learn about Cal State San Bernardino's
doctorate in educational leadership program. Information will be presented
how the program keeps students informed and how to help improve student
achievements.
