The Diversity Achievement Center is excited to present Portland Community
College's Illumination Project.

http://www.pcc.edu/resources/illumination/

The Illumination Project is a student leadership and interactive theater
program that builds understanding around difficult social issues. During the
year-long program, students explore institutional oppression and ways that
our community can work together to end social inequalities. PCC students
write and perform plays based on their real experiences with racism,
homophobia, sexism, classism, and other topics. The Illumination Project
explores solutions to these issues in order to build a better campus
environment.

In winter 2010, the Illumination Project will be focusing on racism and
immigration. Through these plays, the IP aims to encourage people to act
against racism, in order to develop equality and respect. It is necessary to
take action to address these important issues because the facts are
alarming:

-In 2008, 52% of hate crimes were motivated by the race of the victim
(National Criminal Justice Reference Service)

-Four million students report that they have been victims of racism. (
bluecorncomics.com)

-In 2002, the percentage of white Americans with a bachelors degree or
higher was 27%, while only 17% of black Americans had that level of
education. Only 11% of Hispanics had at least a four year degree.
(Census.gov)

-Only 14% of white students attend multiracial schools. (Tolerance.org)

The IPs performances are in an interactive format. Audiences are required to
participate. The Illumination Project provides opportunities for students to
recognize and solve the issues which are presented in the plays.

The PCC Illumination Project will be performing at LBCC, on February 19th,
in the east end of the Commons, at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Seating is
limited to 110 students per performance. If you are interested in
