December 15, the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada
(PLAN)<http://www.planevada.org/>released the first ever Nevada Racial
Equity Report Card. The report card,
which grades legislators and the Governor on their performance during the
2009 legislative session, highlights legislation on education, economic and
health equity, civil rights and tribal sovereignty, and institutional
racism. The report card was a joint effort of Western States Center and
PLAN. Kalpana Krishnamurthy, RACE Program Director at the Center, served as
the principal researcher and author of the report card.

“We believe that racial equity is an important benchmark in evaluating
public policy. The report card is an important accountability tool for
elected officials”

Nevada’s report card, which features the latest data available on racial
disparities in the state, generated a strong response from legislators, the
Governor, and the media. “More than nineteen legislators and the Governor
got an F, so there’s clearly room for improvement,” said Bob Fulkerson,
PLAN’s Executive Director. “But we also saw some real champions of racial
equity – legislators who sponsored bills on home foreclosures, a moratorium
on the death penalty, and creating domestic partnerships in Nevada. The
report card shows how eighteen bills would have benefited communities of
color while also improving the lives of all Nevadans.”
PLAN is reaching out to other racial justice groups in Nevada to bring more
groups together for the 2011 report card. In January, groups in WA and ID
will release their first Racial Equity Report Cards as
well.
