I have gotten several inquiries regarding this PhD project. I emailed Tara
Perino, Associate Director, The PhD Project, tperino at KPMG.com and simlpy
asked her if Asian Americans could apply. Below is the sum total of her
response.
RESPONSE from PhD Project-----------------------------------------------

According to the information that I have Asian Pacific Islander does not
fall under Native American therefore you would not eligible to participate.
However, Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander would be eligible.

So basically, because all Asian Americans are rich and super smart, our
people don't need any support. This is the Model Minority myth that has
hampered our community for so long. Well, let me give you some facts:
-
· Cambodians are the poorest of ANY ethnic group in the US.
· Asian American girls have the highest suicide rate of any
ethnic group.
· More than one million Asian Americans live at or below the
federal poverty level.
· Asian American students are more likely to drop out of school
than white students. (19% v 15%)
· Five Asian Pacific American groups have the lowest college
completion rates of any racial or ethnic group. (i.e. Hmong, Tongans ,
Cambodians, Laotians, Guamanians )
· Among women aged 15 - 24, Asian American girls have the highest
suicide mortality rates across all racial/ethnic groups.
· As early as 5th grade, Asian girls may consider suicide.
· Asian American college students report higher levels of
depressive symptoms than white students.
· At Cornell University, 13 of the 21 suicide victims since 1996
were Asian or Asian American, and Asian-American college students often show
increased risk of depression and anxiety and higher rates of being in a
sexually or physically abusive relationship
This myth also extends itself to the fact that often Asian Americans are
under-identified for special education services. There is no doubt that
African American and Latino students, as well as Native Americans need and
deserve educational and financial support, but to shut out an entire race
because it is perceived that nobody needs help is just racist and ignorant.
