Please find attached a flier for the NECME conference. The keynote is a
nationally recognized expert and scholar on Culturally Responsive
Education - Dr. Jacqueline Jordan Irvine. I had the honor of introducing
her as a keynote at a conference of the National Association for
Multicultural Education in Atlanta, Georgia. The keynote session was
memorable also because the sister of Dr. Martin Luther King was sitting
up front and after I acknowledged her presence the entire ballroom
erupted into applause and the attendees all rose to give her a sustained
round of applause. It was touching too to see many of the hotel wait
staff rush over to give her a big hug. I had met her and gave her a hug
before the session started and it gave me goose-bumps.
Anyway, Dr Irvine proceeded to give a very inspiring and informative
talk on how we must do better to close the achievement gap by focusing
on better ways to teach students of color through Culturally Responsive
Education. This event is free but there is limited seating so please
register now. PLEASE, if you find out you cannot attend, please notify
ACES so others can take your seat.
The conference is only a half day because of the lack of funding -
starts at 8:30 and ends at noon. But there will be a special workshop
planned at the UHART Multiple Intelligences Magnet School on the campus
lead by Dr. Sonia Nieto, author of the #1 best selling textbook on
multicultural education. More details on that to follow. Go to
