Asian Settler Colonialism
You are either a native, or you are a settler
--Haunani Kay Trask
This groundbreaking book asks settlers, specifically Asian settlers, to
reexamine their roles in Hawaii at a time when it is occupied by the US.
Asian Settlers for Justice intends to see that the publication of this book
is but the beginning of ongoing efforts in a broader social movement.
Since the release of Asian Settler Colonialism (UH Press) in late September
of 2008, the group has worked to bring together diverse audiences to promote
discussions of the ways we can unintentionally support colonialism in our
own settler communities, from institutional practices to the habits of our
daily lives. The book has excited community interest and support as well as
caused discomfort and sparked controversy.
Edited by Candace Fujikane and Jon Okamura, a number of noted Hawaii
residents, scholars, and activists contributed to the book, including
Haunani-Kay Trask.
