Subject: Lecture Series

The first of a three-part series on the issue of Chicano/Latino educational attainment begins next week. The series is called "We're Here! We're Here!: Chicanos/Latinos in Higher Education. (The title is a take on Horton Hears a Who for those of you who will wonder what an elephant is doing on the cover. :) ) Attached is the flyer announcing the days and times (the rooms will be confirmed shortly). Please join us and invite your students to one or all of the sessions.

This series is timely and relevant, especially when we place the issue within the broader sociopolitical and economic context our times. The following is a brief excerpt from The Latino Education Crisis: The Consequences of Failed Social Policies by Dr. Patricia Gándara and Dr. Frances Contreras. (It was published this year by Harvard University Press.)

"Some have argued that the exceptionally low educational achievement of Latinos is a disturbing but passing phenomena... we argue, however, that the current data do not give cause for optimism, for they show that the demands of contemporary society are outpacing the ability of post-immigrant generations of Latinos to overcome the educational and socioeconomic barriers they confront."
