Middle School History Teacher 09-10
Lakeside School is an independent coeducational day school offering a broad curriculum in the liberal arts. Founded in 1919, the school enrolls 776 students in grades 5 through 12 from diverse ethnic, racial, religious, and economic backgrounds.
The mission of Lakeside School is to develop in intellectually capable young people the creative minds, healthy bodies, and ethical spirits needed to contribute wisdom, compassion, and leadership to a global society. We provide a rigorous, dynamic academic program through which effective educators lead students to take responsibility for learning. We are committed to sustaining a school in which individuals representing diverse cultures and experiences instruct one another in the meaning and value of community and in the joy and importance of lifelong learning.
This position will be a full-time, regular faculty appointment starting in late August 2009. The position requires standing/sitting, walking to other parts of campus, and occasional travel.
Responsibilities. The Middle School history teacher will join a collaborative department that teaches a core curriculum emphasizing global perspectives and world cultures. The 5th-grade social studies curriculum examines the history of societies living along the Pacific Rim of North and South America; the 6th-grade curriculum focuses on the cultures existing along the route of the Silk Road. The 7th-grade curriculum is a rigorous survey of the history of the United States from its colonial roots to its emergence as the world's most influential and long-lasting democracy. The 8th-grade curriculum (the first year of a three-year sequence in world history) focuses on the kingdoms and empires that rose to prominence between the periods of the agricultural revolution and the Crusades. The position requires teaching courses in 7th-grade United States history and/or 8th-grade world history, according to the candidate's expertise and experience.
Essential duties for Middle School faculty members at Lakeside include: (1) classroom instruction informed by collaboration with other teachers in the department; (2) conferences with students and colleagues; (3) active participation in the work of the department on curriculum development and pedagogy; (4) acting as an academic advisor to a group of students; (5) contributing to the Outdoor Program and service learning program; and (6) assuming at least one additional duty as a faculty member (advising a student club, joining a standing committee, and the like).
Qualifications. The successful applicant will have a bachelor's degree in history with a master's in history or a related field. Significant course work in interdisciplinary studies focusing on the humanities or on the history of a particular region of the world will be of special interest. A minimum of four years of classroom teaching experience is required, preferably at the middle-school level, though those whose teaching has focused on the early years of high school are also encouraged to apply. Familiarity with computers and an interest in technology integration in the history curriculum is essential (PC/Windows platform). The candidate must be able to work with students who vary in educational backgrounds and learning styles, both nurturing and challenging as necessary, and have experience instructing diverse populations of students. References should address the candidate's ability to be a dynamic educator; to his/her eagerness and enthusiasm in working effectively with capable young people at the middle-school level; and to his or her ability to work harmoniously, competently, and respectfully with adult colleagues.
Salary/Benefits. Lakeside School is committed to attracting and retaining outstanding employees through a compensation plan that compares favorably with those of peer schools both locally and nationwide. Individual salary levels-negotiable depending on education and experience-are very competitive. A full benefits package includes TIAA/CREF retirement and generous medical/dental coverage, and equals the best plans in private industry. Lakeside's down-payment assistance program (available after successful evaluation) supports first-time home purchases in the Puget Sound area.
Application Process. Applicants should call 206/440-2763 to request an application form or download a form from the Lakeside School Web site (www.lakesideschool.org) and should submit this with a resumé and cover letter of interest to Lakeside School Employment, 14050 First Avenue NE, Seattle, Washington, 98125-3099.
