POSITION
Advisor – Instructional Designer
Center for School, Family, & Community – Position Number 09-07

DESCRIPTION
The Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory (NWREL) improves educational
results for
children, youth, and adults by providing research and development assistance
in delivering
equitable, high-quality educational programs. NWREL is a private, nonprofit
corporation
which has served the Northwest region since 1966 as its Regional Educational
Laboratory
under contract with the U. S. Department of Education, as well as other
federal, state, and
local agencies and organizations.
This position will serve as an instructional designer coordinating project
teams and subject matter
experts working to create a variety of distance learning and web-based
products, including online
courses, for use by national service programs across the country. The person
in this position will
also serve as instructional designer for the Volunteer Leadership Center.
DUTIES
· Provide guidance, coordination, and leadership to teams of project staff
and
other Subject Matter Experts engaged in the development of online courses as
well as a variety of other distance learning and performance support
products.
· Serve as liaison between funding agency staff, teams of NWREL developers
and
subject matter experts, and California-based Web site contractor to
communicate
and advocate for effective distance learning approaches.
· Serve as lead instructional designer on various teams in adapting source
content
to a variety of distance delivery media.
· Lead Web site design processes on various teams, including making
recommendations regarding interactivity features, graphics, navigation,
course
consistency, testing and tracking, and end user features.
· Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Training: Bachelors degree, with coursework in instructional
design and/or e-learning
Experience: The successful applicant should have the following skills,
knowledge, and abilities
· Three years instructional design experience, producing online courses and
other
distance learning products
· Superior writing skills
· Advanced understanding of adult learning principles through Web-based
delivery
systems
· Three years experience leading teams of content developers and other
Subject
Matter Experts to produce distance learning products for clients
· Knowledge of a variety of Web-based platforms, LMS/CMS systems, and rapid
prototyping elearning tools and strategies.
· Demonstrated experience in developing and adapting source content for a
variety of distance learning media, including online courses
· Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and quickly to produce high
quality
products under tight deadlines
Problem Solving:
· Prioritize work to meet deadline requirements, including due dates for
multiple,
time-sensitive projects
· Selecting data and information resources to use in daily work and team
contributions
· Dividing personal time as a resource between multiple team efforts with
different
needs and schedules
· Structuring work products and to meet needs of national service audiences
Accountability:
· NWREL procedures Quality Control, web development and publication
standards
to assure quality control compliance
· Self-directed with oversight by supervisor
· Overall work is reviewed during annual performance evaluation and periodic
discussion with supervisor
· Budgetary responsibility does not extend to Program or project operating
budgets
Physical Demands/Conditions:
Office
· Sit for prolonged periods of time, requires manual dexterity for operation
of
personal computer and ten-key, must be able to lift boxes weighing 30-40
pounds, operate a telephone, frequent interruptions to concentration,
interact
with a wide range of clients and co-workers
Travel
· Moderate travel requirements (up to 25% of work schedule) including
extended
overnight stays out of state
· Ability to travel by car or common carrier for out of state and rural
travel
· Ability to transport and/or handle moderate sized packages and materials
(up to
30 pounds) at on-site locations.
COMPENSATION
Salary range: $43,100 - $73,800 per year based on experience, plus a
benefits package
that includes vacation, generous employer paid retirement, medical, dental,
life insurance,
transportation benefit, and opportunities for ongoing professional
development.
