MULTICULTURAL FAMILY CENTER DIRECTOR
 
 
DEPARTMENT:  Leisure Services      ANNUALSALARY RANGE:  $47,505 -
$62,129


 
 
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Performs work involving the development
and implementation of programs and services designed to meet the
cultural and circumstantial needs of the diverse population of Dubuque;
performs related duties as required.
 
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  The work in this class involves
responsibilities for the overall leadership and guidance of the
Multicultural Family Center’s stated mission and goals.  The work
requires the exercise of independent judgment and is performed with
relative independence.  The work is performed under the general
supervision of the Leisure Services Manager, with direction and guidance
provided by the Center’s Board of Directors.  Work is reviewed by the
Leisure Services Manager and Board of Directors through reports,
conferences, and results achieved.
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY):
 
ESSENTIAL:  Provide direction in financial development which includes
fundraising and grant writing; develops and implements a variety of
fundraising programs to ensure adequate financial resources for the
Center; develops, supervises and coordinates program development and
implementation; provides consultation to staff and volunteers on program
implementation; reviews and evaluates the programs and activities of the
Center; recruits, hires, trains and supervises employees and volunteers;
insures that the Board of Directors, employees,  volunteers and clients
are provided opportunities to increase their intercultural competence
skills; organizes and facilitates functions for the Board of Directors;
informs the Board of Directors of organizational activities, challenges
and opportunities; recommend policies and plans to the Board of
Directors; represents the Center within the community, with allied
agencies and organizations, and to the media; monitors changing
community needs; ensures that the needs of the culturally-diverse
communities seeking engagement are met in a timely, thorough and
courteous manner; oversees annual budgetary plan, payroll and monthly
statements; generates and monitors fiscal records.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
 
ESSENTIAL:  Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and
techniques of planning a variety of programs serving culturally diverse
populations; considerable knowledge of social identity development and
theories on adapting to change; sensitivity to the needs of
traditionally marginalized communities and an ability to anticipate
barriers these groups may face in the community; skill in the use of
applicable computer programs; ability to maintain records and prepare
reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships across cultural differences with employees, program
participants, related agencies, user groups and the general public;
ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability
to make public presentations; ability to navigate cross-cultural
conflicts and sensitive situations in a professional manner; ability to
use resourcefulness and tact in solving problems and to create unity
around common goals; ability to plan, assign, supervise and coordinate
the activities of employees; ability to plan and organize work for the
accomplishment of objectives; demonstrated ability to work effectively
as a member of a team; demonstrated ability to follow a management
philosophy that is input oriented and values problem solving and the
development of partnerships; desire to be part of an organization that
values service, people, integrity, responsibility, innovation and
teamwork.
 
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:  Considerable professional
experience working with culturally diverse populations and graduation
from an accredited college or university with major course work in
sociology, cross-cultural studies, non-profit management or related
field; or any e
quivalent combination of experience and training which
provides the essential knowledge, skills and abilities.
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Iowa
Driver’s License or, alternatively, the ability to travel independently
throughout the community; ability to speak Spanish is preferred.
