If you are prepare elementary school teachers, you are invited to take part
in a research study being conducted by a doctoral student at The George
Washington University’s Graduate School of Education and Human Development.
If you don't prepare elementary school teachers, but know someone who does,
please pass this to them.

You are being invited to take part in this study because you prepare future
elementary school teachers at an NCATE accredited institution. Please read
this letter and contact the researcher by email at
suzanne1 at gwmail.gwu.eduif you have any questions or concerns.
*Participation in this research is completely voluntary and
anonymous.* Participation
in this survey will not impact employment or membership with professional
organizations. Your academic standing/employment will not be affected in
any way should you choose not to participate.

The purpose of this study is to better understand how colleges of education
are preparing elementary school teachers for the academic study of religion
in the elementary social studies and language arts classrooms within the
guidelines of the First Amendment. If you choose to participate in this
research, please complete the web-based survey (link below) that will take
approximately 20 minutes or less to complete. You are welcome to share any
course syllabi, examples of course materials/experiences related to the
topic of the research so that the researcher can build a richer
understanding of current practices. There will be an email address provided
at the end of the survey in which you can send any course syllabi or
materials you wish to share with the researcher. Please complete the survey
by *April 30, 2009*.

It is hoped that the information collected from this study will help teacher
prep faculty and beginning teachers in the near future. By learning about
current practices in schools of education, researchers and faculty of
education can better design curricula and field experiences that will
provide teachers with the knowledge, attitudes, and awareness they need in
order to effectively address the academic study of religion in schools
within the guidelines of the First Amendment.

Your participation in this survey is of great importance and your
contribution is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your participation and
cooperation in this important effort.
