HANCOCK -- The air in Hancock rang on Saturday morning with the voices and
music of people from all over the globe. Seventy different countries were
represented by people taking part in the 19th annual Parade of Nations, and they
all showed pride in their heritage.
The opportunity for the participants to display their culture meant a lot.
"I just think it's all beautiful, you know, all the cultures together," said
Matt Bradley, who marched in the parade with a Brazilian Samba band.
The participants wore native dress and proudly sported the flags of their
nations, putting aside differences to come together in a manner of peace and
support. As well as an opportunity to celebrate cultural diversity, it was also
a chance to learn about one another.
"This is just a real positive way to learn a little more about each one and
their native dress and even some of their foods," said Lori Muhlig,
coordinator for the Native American Outreach at Michigan Tech.
Spectators showed their support as well by cheering not only for their
native country, but for everyone that walked past.
For some involved, events like this gives them hope for the future.
"Doing something together that's positive...it creates possibilities for the
future," said Bradley.
The parade spanned from Hancock to Houghton, where participants and
spectators got together to continue their cultural celebration.
