Closes: Open Until FilledPosition: The Department of Teacher Education at
the University of Oregon College of Education is seeking to fill an
open-rank tenure-related professor position in Native-American Studies in
Education.
Minimum Qualifications:
Doctorate in education or a related field.
Demonstrated general knowledge of educational issues affecting
Native-American, First Nation, and/or indigenous students and communities.
Demonstrated expertise about the educational needs and experiences of
Native-American students and communities, such as: the history of
Native-American education in North America, current public and educational
policy affecting the education of Native-American students, theories of
governance and sovereignty as they relate to educational processes, the role
educational institutions play in processes of colonization and cultural
genocide, the role indigenous educational practice can play in resisting
colonization and cultural genocide, educational practices tailored to the
needs of Native-American and First Nation students, teacher education
practice that prepare all teachers to serve Native-American students, the
representation of North American indigenous cultures in public school
curriculum, Native-American language revitalization policy and curriculum,
etc.
Evidence of a sustained commitment to the education of Native-American and
First Nation students, to collaboration with Native-American communities in
educational projects, and/or to respecting the sovereign rights of North
American Indigenous peoples as established by federal treaties.
Evidence of a commitment to intersectional analysis of oppression,
including, but not limited to the interacting influences of gender, race,
class, sexuality, (dis)ability, culture, and indigenous identity on
educational experience.
Evidence of ability to conduct research leading to publication.
Evidence of teaching effectiveness.
Ability to work with students and faculty in a variety of disciplines.
Commitment to working with diverse populations.
Preferred Qualifications:
Teaching experience (at the K-12 or university level).
Experience working with Native-American students and communities.
Scholarly focus on North-American indigenous communities.
A strong foundation in a general academic discipline such as: linguistics,
sociology, anthropology, social psychology, cultural psychology, cultural
studies, ethnic studies, Native-American studies, political science,
history, philosophy, etc.
A foundation in a recognizable field of Educational Studies such as:
curriculum theory, educational psychology, educational sociology,
educational anthropology, science education, mathematics education,
literacy, special education, etc.
Experience in writing, directing, or participating in externally funded
projects.
Evidence of participation in national professional organizations.
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will develop, continue, and/or extend a coherent
program of research that has significant national and/or international
impact, one that not only affects educational practice and policy but also
serves as a means to mentor Ph.D. students who can make significant
contributions to the field of Native-American Educational Studies.
The successful candidate would be required to teach courses at the Ph.D.,
Masters, and undergraduate level in one or more of the following areas: (1)
history of education, (2) philosophy of education, (3) curriculum theory,
(4) literacy education, (5) critical pedagogy, (6) psychological foundations
of education, (7) the history of Native-American or First Nation persons in
public education, (8) cultural difference in educational settings, or (9)
education in specific subject matter areas such as language arts, social
studies, mathematics, or science, (10) school-community relations, and/or
(11) community and culturally based education. Additionally, the successful
candidate will have the opportunity to play a significant, though not
exclusive, role in advising students in the College's Sapsik'wala
Scholarship program for Native-American students seeking teaching licensure
in exchange for course release.
Others duties will include general advising to graduate students, directing
doctoral student research, providing consultation to students and faculty.
