Appalachian State University invites applications for the position of 
Director of Parent and Family Services.  Appalachian is a member 
institution of The University of North Carolina System and has an 
enrollment of over 15,000 students.

The Director of Parent and Family Services will report to the Office of 
the Vice Chancellor for Student Development.  The Director of Parent and 
Family Services is responsible for the creation, development, 
implementation, marketing, and administration of a comprehensive parent 
and family program, which includes an orientation program for parents 
that coincides with the student orientation schedule.  Additionally, 
there is direct involvement in student advising, leadership training and 
development.  Due to the ombudsman nature of this position, this staff 
member may advise, counsel, and serve as an advocate for students and 
families experiencing difficulties or crises.  This position requires 
the flexibility, ability, and willingness to work nights and weekends in 
structured and unstructured settings with students, staff, and faculty 
and other campus constituents.

The Director of Parent and Family Services will have a minimum of a 
master's degree in higher education, college student personnel, 
counseling, or a related field.  The Director will have an awareness and 
understanding of the transitional needs of new students and their 
families, professional experience in advising, counseling, programming, 
and parent involvement, and the ability to organize, implement, and 
evaluate programs.  Demonstrated skills of leadership and communication, 
involvement in relevant professional associations, a well-developed 
sense of responsibility, sensitivity to individual differences, and an 
obvious interest and enthusiasm for working with students and families 
are characteristics expected of this person.   

Anticipated starting date is February 1, 2009.  Salary and benefits are 
competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
