Are you ready for the challenges and opportunities of teaching an
increasingly diverse student population? Do you want to prepare your
students to live in a diverse world by infusing multicultural perspectives
into your curriculum? In this course, you will evaluate and confront
teacher and student bias. You will add to your own appreciation of cultural
diversity while developing ways to teach respect for differences, build
bridges of understanding among students, and confront bullying. Interactive
methods bring alive problems that teachers really encounter. You will learn
about existing multicultural curricula, including the nationally recognized
"A World of Difference" project, and learn strategies for developing new
curricula and closing the achievement gap. Workshops include group
discussions, simulations, guest speakers, case studies, videos, and sharing
of multicultural resources. For Education majors, this course counts as an
Education Department elective.
