If Bill Ayers does speak up it will be a feeding frenzy on his past and not about his tangential association with Barack. It will feed fire to the non-issue and Barack will get sucked into it.
On a bit of a different note, I read the petition in support of Ayers and find it a bit off the mark. As far as I know, the press is not going after Ayers as an educator (the way they did with Ward Churchill in Colorado) for his political beliefs. So I'm not too sure why Bill is perceived to need support in the first place. It's Barack who is under attack.

I think it's just the opposite: no matter what Bill Ayers says, Obama will be
the loser. Bill is right to keep quiet for the time being.
