Assistant Professor, Tenure-Track
The Department of Student Development and Pupil Personnel Services
(SDPPS) in the School of Education at the University of Massachusetts
Amherst is seeking candidates to join a dedicated and accomplished
community of faculty, students, and staff as an Assistant Professor in
Social Justice Education. This is a full-time, tenure-track position
beginning in September 2009.
The School of Education is NCATE-accredited and offers a comprehensive
program leading to Master’s and Doctoral degrees. We share a
fundamental commitment to social justice and the pursuit of
educational excellence. Located in the beautiful Pioneer Valley of
Western Massachusetts, the University of Massachusetts Amherst is the
flagship campus of the Commonwealth’s university system and is a
leading center of public higher education in the Northeast.
The SDPPS Department offers concentrations in Social Justice
Education, Special Education, School Counseling Education, and School
Psychology with existing and or developing strengths in leadership,
transitions, literacy, student assessment, and educational equity.
A major initiative is underway in Social Justice Education to develop
partnerships with P-12 school systems focused on staff development,
curriculum design, and organizational change that will enable schools
to effectively meet the needs of diverse communities of learners in a
society that continues to grapple with an ever increasing number of
diversity and social justice issues. These partnerships will lead to
innovative, research-based on-site and online social justice education
programming for teachers, parents and students at the P-12 level. The
successful candidate will enhance the program’s ability to maintain
our current leadership as social justice educators in higher education
settings, while developing teaching-partnerships and grant
opportunities intended to serve the social justice and diversity needs
in P-12 settings.
Qualifications: Doctorate in Education or in a related social science
or human relations field with application to P-12 educational
settings; demonstrated ability or excellent potential to conduct
externally funded scholarship, research and publication, experience
with practice-based research models (quantitative and/or qualitative)
and familiarity with research on P-12 teaching and learning;
experience with a broad range of social justice, multicultural, and/or
diversity issues, preferably in school contexts; ability to work
effectively with graduate students and faculty of diverse cultures and
backgrounds; and experience in or strong indication of promise for
developing internet-based instructional models, and ability to become
an outstanding teacher at the university level. Candidates will be
expected to demonstrate their experience with a range of social
justice, multicultural, and/or diversity issues, preferably in P-12
school contexts.
Responsibilities: Initiate, lead, and participate in high quality
scholarship and externally funded projects addressing critical
diversity and social justice issues in P-12 school settings that
include the design and implementation of practice-based evaluation and
assessment for P-12 curricula, programs and pedagogy; develop and
teach courses that include a focus on P-12 schools; advise and direct
M.Ed., CAGS and Ed.D. students; establish P-12 school partnerships
with school and community stakeholders; maintain active relationship
with School of Education licensure programs; take a leadership role in
the Social Justice Education concentration and provide service to the
profession.
