Subj: National Excellence in Urban Education Award

Please forward this email to your participating district leaders and
NUA mentors.

Dear Urban Education Leaders and NUA Mentors:

Congratulations on the successful work you are doing with urban
schools. The National Center for Urban School Transformation is
accepting applications for the National Excellence in Urban Education
Award. (See attached application.) The purpose of the award is to
recognize the dedication and talent of urban school educators and
students, provide a benchmark of excellence that motivates reform
efforts, and deepen knowledge of best practices for promoting urban
school transformation. The award is given annually to a small number
of public schools and public charter schools that have achieved
excellent academic results for all the populations they serve.
Although the award includes a small monetary prize, the real purpose
is to promote the sharing of effective practices among schools and
districts that are striving to achieve impressive results for urban
students. To be eligible for consideration, schools must meet all of
the criteria listed on our website at http://www.ncust.org
<https://webmail.foundation.sdsu.edu/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.ncust.org/>
. We invite you to review the criteria and nominate schools from your
National Urban Alliance projects.

All applicants that meet the criteria will be placed on NCUST's School
Honor Roll for 2009. These schools will receive a certificate
indicating that they met the Center's rigorous eligibility criteria.
All Honor Roll Schools will be listed on the NCUST website.

NCUST will compare the applications of schools that meet all
eligibility criteria to identify those with the strongest indicators
of high achievement for all students served. No more than 20 schools
will be identified as award finalists. An NCUST team will visit all
finalist schools to validate the application data, acquire additional
evidence of school excellence, and learn about the processes and
practices that contributed to the school's success.

Ten schools will receive the 2009 Excellence in Urban Education Award.
Winners will be recognized in San Diego at the NCUST Symposium on May
7-8, 2009. Each winner will receive travel costs to San Diego, a
check for $1,000, a large banner, and a framed certificate
acknowledging the school's distinction. Winners will present sessions
at the Symposium, as educators from across the nation seek to learn
about the winners' impressive accomplishments. In the past three
years, elementary, middle, and high schools from several urban
districts, including Atlanta, GA, Austin, TX, Bakersfield, CA,
Cleveland, OH, Columbus, OH, Detroit, MI, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Houston,
TX, Long Beach, CA, Miami, FL, Newark, NJ, Norfolk, VA, Oklahoma City,
OK, Peoria, IL, Philadelphia, PA, and Richmond, VA have earned
Excellence in Urban Education Awards.

Please have your qualifying schools complete the attached application
and send both electronic and hard copies (with original signatures) so
that they arrive by November 14, 2008. If you would like additional
information about the process or previous winners, please visit our
website, e-mail us at ncust at mail.sdsu.edu, or call us at 619-594-7905.
We would be pleased to help celebrate your achievements through our
award program.

Sincerely,
