Position Announcement
Assistant Professor, Elementary Education, focus on Literacy/Reading
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction invites applications and
nominations for a tenure track faculty member in Reading and Literacy with a
focus on Elementary Education.

The Graduate School of Education awards masters and doctoral degrees, and
prepares teachers, administrators, and counselors for urban, diverse, and
other communities, emphasizing issues of equity and social justice. In the
Department of Curriculum and Instruction programs are offered in licensure
for early childhood, elementary, mid-level and secondary education,
educational media, technology and literacy, and bilingual teacher
preparation. As a major institution for teacher education located in
Oregon's largest urban center, PSU's Graduate school of Education is in a
unique position to take leadership and have an impact on school change in
the area.
Appointment: Assistant Professor of Education, 1.0 FTE, tenure-track,
nine-month appointment, commencing September 16, 2009. Summer employment is
available, but not guaranteed.
Responsibilities:
• Teaching methods courses in Reading and Language Arts at the early
childhood and elementary levels
• Teaching in the reading endorsement program
• Teaching other core master's degree courses
• Leading cohorts of pre-service teachers seeking early
childhood/elementary certification
• Advancing a scholarly agenda and mentoring masters and doctoral
students in research
• Actively supporting the Graduate School of Education's diversity
agenda.
Qualifications:
• Earned doctorate in literacy/reading education or related field
• Experience or evidence of capability to lead cohorts of pre-service
teaching candidates
• Experience in multicultural and diverse settings and a commitment to
social justice
• Elementary teaching experience (minimum three years) or the equivalent
• Background in ESL/bilingual education or science education preferred
• Expertise in using technology to support learning.
Salary: The starting annual salary rate for this position will be dependent
upon qualifications and experience with an excellent benefits package
including fully paid healthcare; a generous retirement and vacation package;
and reduced tuition rates for employee, spouse or dependent at any of the
Oregon University System schools.
