The University of Washington Tacoma (UWT) is currently accepting applications and nominations for a full-time, 12 month position as Director of General Education. This position is a direct report to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, and works in close collaboration with the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and other senior campus leadership. In the fall of 2006, UWT admitted its first cohort of freshmen. We are seeking dynamic, talented people to join us as we transition from an upper-division undergraduate and graduate institution established in 1990, to a full, four-year university.

This is a tenured faculty position open at the associate and full professor rank, with primary administrative responsibilities for the office dedicated to serving first year students and those with undeclared majors. This includes: Coordinate the core curriculum including schedules, staffing, and course development; supervise staff and advisors for first-year and undeclared students; budget development and management; develop and implement an ongoing assessment plan for General Education; coordinate faculty development opportunities for faculty teaching lower-division students; in collaboration with Student Affairs and Enrollment Services, coordinate summer academic programs (e.g., New Student Orientation, Bridge); chair General Education Advisory Committee; work with administrators, faculty, and staff to ensure the success of UWT students. We are currently undergoing a campus-wide evaluation
of our first year experience; the Director will be responsible for implementing the final recommendations. Teaching one course per year will be expected.

We are seeking demonstrated success in program development, planning, implementation, evaluation, and reporting in a dynamic, change-driven environment; sophisticated critical and creative thinking skills to solve non-routine problems; flexibility, creativity, and the ability to work with ambiguity. Evidence of a commitment to interdisciplinarity. Demonstrated success working with diverse populations of college students (e.g., underrepresented racial/ethnic populations, disabled students, speakers of languages other than English, international students, returning students).

Requirements: A doctorate and scholarly/teaching record appropriate to the rank of associate or full professor at UWT and demonstrated record of success with first year students and/or undecided students.

One of three campuses of the University of Washington, UWT is forging its own identity as a metropolitan university that shares the University of Washington’s commitment to high quality teaching and research and is committed to participating in the educational, cultural, and economic development of the South Puget Sound. Located largely in renovated buildings in Tacoma’s downtown warehouse district, UWT serves a diverse population of South Puget Sound students.
