The Office of Student Life provides advocacy and develops programs and
services that support students' academic and personal development.
Staff members assess the needs of the changing student body and
initiate programs that respond to those needs. This position plays a
significant role as part of our Student Affairs Division efforts on
diversity and community building. The primary purpose of the position
within the Office of Student Life is to assist the ethnic student
unions and collaborate with Multicultural Center staff and Office of
Multicultural Academic Support staff in achieving the objectives of
ensuring that students of color have a successful experience at the
University of Oregon.

The position provides support and assists students in developing
programs designed to enhance and foster a campus environment that
recognizes, celebrates, and values its racial and ethnic diversity.
This position is responsible for providing leadership training and
team building as well as outreach to campus groups and organizations.
Other functions include assisting in the development of policy and
response to emergent issues concerning race, diversity, and higher
education. The position reports to the assistant director of student
life and has the following responsibilities:

Responsibilities
I. Provide input and coordinate the development of programs for
students in response to the changing needs of the student body,
focusing on racial and ethnic issues. Work in partnership with the
student staff and the program advisers of the Multicultural Center,
the Women's Center, and LGBTQA Office, ethnic student unions, student
government (ASUO), and other student groups to support the development
of educational and cultural programming related to general
multicultural issues. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships
with students, campus groups, and professional organizations regarding
issues of racial and ethnic diversity and campus climate, including
international students.
II. Act as a resource/trainer offering innovative leadership trainings
and materials for students of color and the ethnic student union
leaders. Assist with coordinating workshops and seminars that support
multicultural awareness and leadership within student government
(ASUO), the Women's Center, LGBTQA, Holden Leadership Center, and
other student programs, faculty, and staff.
III. Act as a liaison and resource between other university
administrators and students of color.
A. Serve on the President's Council on Race.
B. Serve as an affiliate of the Office of institutional Equity and Diversity.
C. Disseminate information to various staff working on diversity
programming to ensure strong communication and collaboration.
D. Support students of color in facing the special challenges
encountered on a predominantly white campus.
E. Join residence life staff in offering diversity trainings and
support for resident students of color.
IV. Serve as a consultant and resource for the student affairs units
and student organizations on issues of racism, diversity, and campus
climate.
Serve as collaborative partner in campus wide diversity issues.
Specific partnership efforts exist with the Office of Multicultural
Academic Support, the Center on Diversity and Community (CoDaC), the
Career Center, Residence Life, Health Center, and Counseling Center,
and other appropriate groups in delivering programs, resources, and
services to students, faculty, staff, and prospective students in
specialized recruitment events.
V. Serve as a collaborative partner and resource for off-campus
community groups and organizations on issues of racism, diversity, and
multiculturalism. This can include but not limited to: Interagency
Diversity and Equity Coalition (IDEC), Lane County MLK Jr. Planning
Committee, Lane Community College, Community Alliance for Lane County
(CALC).
VI. Serve as co-coordinator of the UO Bias Response Team (BRT). Work
in conjunction with team members to facilitate victim support and
appropriate institutional response to bias-related incidents.
Co-supervise student staff and ensure BRT database and report records
are maintained.
VII. Administer established OSL Diversity Education and Support Programs:
A. Intercultural Mentoring Program Advancing Community Ties (IMPACT):
for new students of color, linking them with upper-division students
and campus resources
B. Chair and budgetary oversight of the campus wide UO MLK Jr.
Planning Committee
C. Multicultural Career Alliance (MCA) Professionals Mentoring Dinner:
Networking dinner geared at career development of students of color.
D. Assist ASUO in implementation of annual Weaving New Beginnings reports.
VIII. Work in collaboration with the Office of Multicultural Academic
Support (OMAS) staff. Regularly attend OMAS staff meetings to ensure
coordination of programs and activities between the two offices to
assist students of color.
IX. Office of Student Life Generalist Duties
A. General duties
1. Provide general assistance to the associate dean of
students/director, office of student life, and the student life unit,
as needed.
2. Contribute to overall goals of program development and service to
students as a member of a staff team, as an active participant in
staff meetings, and as an active member of the university community.
3. Advise student honorary and/or service organizations.
4. Assume responsibilities for emerging areas of need as identified by
department.
5. Serve on departmental and university committees.
B. Drop-in and pager duty
1. Serve as case manager for emergency situations that occur during
assigned daytime drop-in or evening/weekend pager duty shifts.
2. Provide counseling and emergency assistance to students.
3. Assess student and university needs for each case.
4. Connect students with assistance from campus and non-campus resources.
5. Follow-up to insure that student requests have been addressed.
6. Assist other case managers with difficult cases as necessary.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree; experience developing and/or implementing programs
in a college or university setting; experience performing generalist
student affairs work; experience working with students and faculty;
demonstrated experience with and/or commitment to working with
students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds; firsthand
experience working on issues of racial diversity in higher education.

In addition, the candidate should have experience in planning,
developing, and implementing programs for students, with special
attention to issues of racial diversity and tolerance. The successful
candidate should have knowledge of leadership training and
cross-cultural communication skills and the ability to work
effectively as part of a team and with building coalitions.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in a discipline related to student affairs, education,
or social systems preferred.

$36,000-$38,000.
