GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

This is a 12-month, renewable position reporting to the Vice President for
Student Affairs. The Chief of Staff is a key member of the Vice President's
office responsible for central coordination of all activities and a wide
variety of professional support. This position represents the Vice President
for Student Affairs or Associate/Assistant Vice President at meetings when
required and appropriate.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Oversees the operations, staff and budget of the Vice President for
Student Affairs office and serves as the primary point of contact for budget
officers within the Division.

2. Works closely with the Vice President for Student Affairs to construct
annual budget plans; monitors various budgets and recommends adjustments as
appropriate.

3. Conducts research, prepares speeches, presentations and talking points on
an array of topics and for a breadth of constituents. Composes
correspondence dealing with issues and subject matter that requires
considerable sensitivity, judgment, or negotiation as appropriate.

4. Designs and manages a system to ensure fair and effective processes for
classified and unclassified searches, hiring and promotion, salary
determination and advancement opportunities for all Student Affairs
employees; consults with unit leaders and staff as necessary to address
issues.

5. Liaisons with University leadership and works effectively and astutely
with other Vice Presidents, General Counsel, ASUO and their staff. Interacts
effectively with student leadership and student groups; understands the
student government process and plays a key liaison role between the VPSA
office and student government.

6. Anticipates the needs of the Vice President for Student Affairs and
provides effective counsel and advice.

7. Develops agendas and coordinates the Division Director's meetings and the
Student Affairs Council.

8. Ensures information flow to and from the Vice President for Student
Affairs office is effective; tracks, monitors and follows the progress of
projects, action items, and information that emanates from the office.

9. Supervises the centralized IT efforts for the Division.

10. Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

* Bachelor's degree required; masters or other professional degree
preferred.
* Five to seven years experience at an administrative level in higher
education with the Oregon University System or similar institution.
* Extensive experience in Student Affairs, experience with University policy
and procedures, strategic planning, policy development, budget management,
knowledge of student government, and substantial knowledge of the various
units and offices within the Division of Student Affairs, student
development and demonstrated cultural competence.
* Exceptionally strong writing and verbal skills and the ability to work
with a wide variety of people from different backgrounds and cultures.
* Effective interpersonal skills and the capacity to maintain
confidentiality regarding sensitive subjects and topics.
* Ability to work cooperatively and strategically in a team environment with
all levels of professionals, faculty and staff, as well as a passion for
working with and assisting students.
* Understands organizational policies and procedures necessary to ensure
appropriate decision-making protocols are followed within the Division.

SALARY RANGE: $75,000-$85,000
