Since any definition of what a 'sustainable' world would look like includes multicultural cooperation, I send along an invitation to an event in Ithaca, NY that will be laying groundwork for a global initiative growing out of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.
GREENING THE ARTS, a Symposium to Explore a Role for the Arts in Creating a Sustainable World - April 25 & 26 in Ithaca, NY - is part of the participatory design/planning stage for ARTS AT THE HEART OF A SUSTAINABLE WORLD, co-hosted by Ithaca's Level Green Institute and Earth Charter USA. The next such gathering will be international, in New York City in April '09.
I'm patching the short, share-able version of the invitation in below - please pass it along to anyone you think might be interested. I'm also attaching a longer summary, which gives more of a sense of the symposium's purpose, program, and intended outcomes.
I also attach the text of the Earth Charter, which we're using as an ethical and action frame for Arts at the Heart. It's an extraordinary document, generated over a ten-year period from interviews with children, villagers, and grassroots as well as top educators and government leaders, under leadership from Steven Rockefeller and Mikhail Gorbachev. It's being used by school teachers, community organizations, even corporations, all over the world, as the starting point for a wide range of programming. <earthcharter.org>
I've been lurking on this listserv and very much appreciate all I'm learning - thank you.
