Dear Social Justice Colleague,
We have been invited to write a book chapter on Social Justice and the
theme of the book is "good news from American classrooms;" we assume the
book will have a similarly upbeat title...and, we must admit, we think
that this is a refreshing perspective: reporting on good things that are
happening out there (certainly there must be SOME good things happening
in spite of the current educational atmosphere) rather than only
bemoaning the obvious shortcomings that exist when it comes to practices
that support social justice particularly and good teaching more
generally. Rather than examining the social justice issue from only
our perspectives and only from our limited knowledge of solid social
justice education "programs," "practices," "curriculum," etc., we invite
you to send along the following:
1. Your understanding of what social justice means and what education
for social justice entails;
2. a description of something positive you know of that is "going on"
in the world of social justice education, at any and all
levels/grades/ages;
3. a defense of how this particular practice grows social justice as
you understand it--research based or otherwise;
4. any and all information about the program that you might find
important to include in the chapter.
Your contribution to this chapter will be acknowledged however you would
prefer: by name and program; anonymously; via a pseudonym; etc, just let
us know your preference.
We have a difficult deadline and will need any input you can provide
within the next several weeks; thanks in advance for helping us get the
good news of social justice education out to others...we can probably
all use some "good news" on this essential educational issue.
You may send your contributions to either of the email addresses below:
Thanks,
Yolanda Medina
