Office of Multicultural Academic Support Mission:
The Office of Multicultural Academic Support (OMAS) strives to be a
warm, caring, and welcoming academic support unit for students and the
entire University of Oregon campus community. Our staff specializes in
providing a culturally supportive environment that empowers
self-identified students of color and students from diverse backgrounds
to fulfill their educational goals and meet their potential.
We do this through:
- Retention supports that address the unique experiences of students of
color on a predominately white campus
- Multiculturally focused academic advising
- Supports for social networking and intercultural community building
- Advocacy for students' interests and initiatives
- Program support for scholarship recipients
- Leadership development opportunities
- Career and educational development and advancement
- Student recognition and acknowledgement
- Individual needs assessment and resources referral
- Collaborative support for University student recruitment, retention
and community efforts
General Description of the Position:
The director will provide vision and leadership to OMAS that ensures
that students of color and students with diverse backgrounds have access
to a successful and productive experience at the University of Oregon.
The director is responsible for coordinating a variety of multicultural
academic advising services designed to enhance student excellence and
better ensure successful student outcomes, particularly in the areas of
retention and graduation. The director is responsible for supervising
OMAS advisors and office support staff, and for oversight of the OMAS
budget.
Specific Duties:
Oversee and manage the daily operations of OMAS, including the
development and implementation of OMAS programs and services. Supervise
all OMAS advisors and support staff, while providing professional
mentorship and guidance. Lead OMAS retention efforts for students of
color and students with diverse backgrounds, including academic support
services. Oversee the successful development and coordination of
transition and orientation activities for new and continuing students of
color and students with diverse backgrounds. Prepare reports of OMAS
programs, including goals and outcomes. Serve on university committees,
including but not limited to, ad hoc and standing committees charged
with improving the climate for diversity. Cultivate positive and
collaborative relationships with academic and administrative units on
campus that provide student services. In conjunction with the Office of
Institutional Equity and Diversity, offer consultation and informational
resources to departments and offices on campus, including central
administration, regarding policies, programs, and issues that impact or
are likely to impact students of color and students from diverse
backgrounds
Required Qualifications:
Master's degree in college student personnel, counseling, higher
education administration or related field; experience working as a
professional in higher education; demonstrated experience providing
direct services to students of color and students from diverse
backgrounds; a minimum of three years of progressive leadership and
supervisory experience; understanding of and experience working with
multicultural equity issues on a predominately white campus; extensive
knowledge of national best and emerging practices related to advising
multicultural students for achievement and success; ability to
communicate effectively verbally and in written form with students,
colleagues and community members who represent a variety of
constituencies and interests.
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD in a field related to college student personnel, counseling, or
higher education; experience writing and managing grants that focus on
the innovation and dissemination of best practices related to
multicultural academic advising; knowledge and experience related to
student assessment and program evaluation; bilingual or multilingual.
Salary:
Salary range is $50,000-$65,000 per year, based on experience and
qualifications. Excellent fringe benefits including State of Oregon PEBB
