Racism and How It Affects Our Health: A curriculum guide for people
who care about African American adolescent females and their
health,Charinetta "Chi" Ellis and Margaret Dexheimer Pharris, College
of St. Catherine, St. Paul MN, 62 pages, 2007.
This guide contains instructions on how to design and conduct forums
that help teens to understand the dynamics of racism and how not to
internalize it.
The curriculum in this dialogue guide was created to help African
American young women identify and understand the different types of
racism (internalized, personally-mediated, and systemic/
institutionalized), as well as develop coping mechanisms so that
racism is not internalized. The forum curriculum draws on exercises,
information, and handouts from various people and publications, which
are referenced throughout this document.
Two DVDs are provide to accompany the Curriculum Guide: DVD I
contains "The History of Racism for African Americans" by Shvonne
Johnson. DVD II includes "Healthy Coping Mechanisms for Not
Internalizing Racism" by LaVonne Moore, "Spoken Word" by Shvonne
Johnson, "Celi Dean, Miss Black USA 2005," and "Anti-Racism Ambassador
Graduation Introduction" by Charlnitta "Chi" Ellis.
