National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)
2008 Summer Research for Underrepresented Minority Students
"Providing students with valuable drug abuse research experiences"
The Latino Research Team (LRT) at the Oregon Social Learning Center (OSLC)
in Eugene, Oregon, is soliciting applications for its annual summer
internship program through the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). To
be eligible for this program, applicants must be from a racial/ethnic
background that is recognized as underrepresented in the fields of
biomedical and behavioral science, including African Americans, Hispanics,
American Indians/Alaska Natives, and Asian/Pacific Islanders. Applicants
must be currently enrolled in college and in good academic standing.
Summer Research with NIDA is a part of the Research Supplements for
Underrepresented Minorities ("minority supplements") program. The program
encourages recipients to pursue careers in biomedical and behavioral
research by providing them with opportunities to work with investigators in
the field.
Dr. Martinez' Adolescent Latino Acculturation Study (ALAS) and the Latino
Youth and Family Empowerment-II Project (LYFE-II) projects are part of an
ongoing collaboration between the OSLC Latino Research Team and community
partners in the Eugene/Springfield and Woodburn, Oregon, areas. These
projects are a means of addressing significant gaps in prevention science in
evaluating and addressing the needs of Latino families with youngsters at
risk for substance use and related problems.
The internship with the ALAS project is an eight-week program that provides
students with an opportunity to learn about prevention science and about
conducting federally funded research projects. Interns participate in every
aspect of the research projects and also conduct independent research and
analysis in an area related to multiculturalism.
The program will begin June 23 and end August 18 (dates tentative). Interns
are paid a stipend of $8.50/hour and will work 40 hours a week at the OSLC
office in downtown Eugene, Oregon. No benefits are provided.
