Full-time Lecturer Secondary Education

The Education Department at Connecticut College invites applications
for a full-time Lecturer in Secondary Teacher Education to begin fall
2008. Lecturers are on-going, full-time members of the Department. We
are especially interested in scholars with a firm grounding in critical
pedagogy/theory. Candidates with teaching experience in public schools
and who have worked with school-university partnerships in contexts of
diversity will be given preference. We seek creative and caring
candidates, committed to the socio-political project of re-imagining
schools as sites of social justice and agency. As Connecticut College
is a liberal arts institution, the ability to teach across disciplinary
boundaries is essential. This is an opportunity to become part of a
small, dynamic team of teacher-scholars dedicated to developing
critical educators and teacher candidates ready to take on their role
as public intellectuals in the twenty-first century.

Required Qualifications: Masters Degree required. A strong
concentration in science and/or math education and measurement,
evaluation/assessment or related field. Knowledge and understanding of
critical pedagogy. Teaching experience at the secondary/middle school
level.

Desired Qualifications: Demonstrated knowledge of critical
theory/pedagogy and commitment to social justice issues in public
schools; strong quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis skills;
program evaluation experience; expertise in evaluation, testing,
accountability, differentiated instruction and/or authentic assessment;
knowledge of educational technology and integrating technology in
classroom curriculum; and K-12 teaching experience in urban settings,
especially in math or science.

Responsibilities: Based on a normal yearly teaching load for
lecturers, the successful candidate will teach courses including
science and/or math education within the department’s elementary
education program; assessment and evaluation to pre-service teacher
candidates; other responsibilities will include maintaining the
departmental assessment program.

Salary and benefits will be competitive. Lecturers are hired initially
for 2 years, evaluated and renewed for 2 years, and then evaluated and
renewed for 5-year contracts. Applicants should submit a cover letter,
curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation and unofficial
graduate transcripts. In addition, candidates should submit a
description of their teaching philosophy. The search process will begin
immediately and continue until the position is filled.

Connecticut College is a private, highly selective liberal arts college
with strong commitment to the liberal arts tradition and an emphasis on
broad interdisciplinary teaching and research. The college is an
Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer and is committed by
mission to developing diversity and sustaining a diverse faculty and
staff. Contact: Professor Michael James, Box 5444, Bolles House,
