The Neag School of Education/Teacher Education Unit at the University of
Connecticut seeks to fill the position of Academic Advisor I to provide
advising on specific academic programs and policies for
undergraduate/graduate students in the Neag School of Education. Under
the general direction of designated supervisor, this position is
responsible for recruiting and advising pre-Education students,
especially ethnic minority students. He/she will also counsel students
to meet academic and career goals, coordinate and implement programs to
promote retention, and coordinate the peer mentoring program. This
position includes some evening and weekend activities and travel within
the State of Connecticut.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree; one to two years experience
advising students; good communication skills and ability to relate well
to students, faculty and/or parents; knowledge of academic programs in
education.
Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in counseling, education or
related field; experience and interest in working with students from
diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds; interest in urban
education and social justice issues related to education; excellent
written and oral communication, computer, interpersonal and counseling
skills; ability to troubleshoot problems that interfere with the
student's academic progress and work effectively to resolve them;
interest and/or experience preparing students for a competitive
admission process; knowledge of recruitment and retention best
practices, especially related to ethnic minority students.
