Subject: [latinosineducation] Association of Raza Educators Statement on
Jordan High and Fourm Announcement
A.R.E. Statement on Situation at Jordan High School:
The Association of Raza Educators (A.R.E.) continues its fight to defend
academic freedom and the human dignity of teachers and students at Jordan
High in Watts . Karen Salazar, English teacher at Jordan and a member of
A.R.E. Los Angeles, was recently attacked by administration for being too
Afro-Centric in her teaching. She was further criticized for using a
three-page excerpt from The Autobiography of Malcolm X as a reading in her
classroom and told she would be terminated from her position at the end of
the school year.
The Association of Raza Educators would like to declare the following:
1. We will defend the right of Academic Freedom and Cultural Relevance
in our curriculum, pedagogy, and classrooms.
2. We will continue to build solidarity and unity among people of all
colors, races, genders and sexualities. This also explicitly, and most
importantly, means unity among African/Black and Raza/indigenous
communities.
3. We will defend the rights of ANY educator who teaches students the
legacy of struggle that women and people of color have historically, and
continue to engage in, and the importance of civic engagement, self love and
self determination - all of which are essential components to any true
educational experience.
4. As educators, we not only have the right, but the duty, to defend
the educational and intellectual integrity of our classrooms. This includes
correcting and going beyond curriculum and pedagogy that are Euro-centric
and male-dominated.
5. We will actively struggle against any administrator, school, and/or
school district that attacks and dehumanizes our fellow teachers and
students in a fascist manner. We will not be stopped nor deal with acts of
intimidation, threats, harassment, and/or lies by any administrator or
school official.
We will continue the struggle until at Jordan High School until justice
prevails. As the recent struggles of the teachers from Oaxaca, Mexico have
taught us, El Maestro Luchando, También Esta Ensenando!

Education is a very noble field, which I love. But today it means
confronting the government. You have to be ready to fight for the people and
their children; and not just in the classroom.
