Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued a historic apology for more
than a century of abuse and cultural loss involving Indian residential
schools on June 11, 2008.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the government's role in removing and
isolating children from their homes, families and culture.

A colleague of mine attended this event on Wednesday. She and many others
shed tears - her mother attended a residential school herself.

There is a clip of Assembly of First Nations National Chief Phil Fontaine's
response on YouTube. It is chilling to watch and realize that it took until
2008 for this to be acknowledged.
