Emeryville, CA January 25, 2008 - Speak Out has released a 4-volume
racial justice educational curriculum to accompany the groundbreaking
documentary, The Color of Fear. Written and edited by Victor Lee
Lewis and Hugh Vasquez, "Lessons from The Color of Fear" is designed
especially for educators, scholars, social justice advocates,
diversity trainers and facilitators.
Two of the men featured in the film, Lewis and Vasquez created this
rigorous and comprehensive resource to trigger critical reflections
about the issues raised in the film that is both safe and
challenging. "We realized there was a need for a curriculum that
would go beyond the 'workshop' that focuses primarily on 'processing'
the deep feelings triggered by film screenings," said Lewis. "It is
designed to also serve as a catalyst to building genuine
cross-cultural understanding and equity in our society."
The documentary (1994, directed by Lee Mun Wah) is still one of the
most widely used diversity resources in the country. Scholar and
author Cornell West describes it as "one of the best films on racism
I have ever seen," and it continues to promote dialogue on hundreds
of college campuses, in high schools, work places and community
settings.
The newly-published curriculum offers guidelines to a wide range of
useful approaches to teaching with the film than have ever been
gathered in one place:
* Volume I covers 25 lessons drawn from the first half of the film
and includes a companion DVD. Each lesson corresponds to a video
selection, organized for easy viewing and navigation;
* Volume II is the complete time-indexed transcript of the
documentary, The Color of Fear;
* Volume III is an exclusive interview by white anti-racism educator
Peggy McIntosh with David Christensen and Victor Lewis from The Color
of Fear cast, exploring the film and the meaning of white privilege;
* Volume IV includes ten "field reports" from experts with many years
of experience teaching with The Color of Fear. These essays provide
in-depth models and information on specific teaching approaches and
themes.
The cost of the curriculum is $249 for institutions and $125 for
individuals and community groups plus shipping and handling. It is
available for purchase online at
