Professional Opportunity: Upper School History Teacher 08-09
Lakeside School is an independent coeducational day school offering a broad curriculum in the liberal arts. Founded in 1919, the school enrolls 776 students in grades 5 through 12 from diverse ethnic, racial, religious, and economic backgrounds.
The mission of Lakeside School is to develop in intellectually capable young people the creative minds, healthy bodies, and ethical spirits needed to contribute wisdom, compassion, and leadership to a global society. We provide a rigorous, dynamic academic program through which effective educators lead students to take responsibility for learning. We are committed to sustaining a school in which individuals representing diverse cultures and experiences instruct one another in the meaning and value of community and in the joy and importance of lifelong learning.
This will be a full-time, regular faculty appointment, starting in late August 2008. The position requires standing/sitting, walking to other parts of campus, and occasional travel.
Responsibilities. The Upper School history teacher will join a department that has significantly reworked its core curriculum and electives. A three-year world history progression starts in 8th grade with ancient and medieval world history, continues in 9th grade with world history 1200 to 1870, and ends in 10th grade with a course that provides a survey of the world in the 20th century, with each section providing focused inquiry into one of three key regions-Africa, Latin America, or Asia. The curriculum finishes with 11th-grade United States history and more than 15 elective courses offered every year. The person's initial assignment will most likely be teaching required courses in world and/or United States history, depending on his or her experience and areas of strength; the person will also have the option of teaching one or more of the department's upper-level electives. Essential duties for faculty members at Lakeside include (1) classroom instruction; (2) conferences with students and colleagues; (3) active participation in the work of the department on curriculum development and pedagogy; (4) acting as an academic adviser to a group of students; and (5) assuming at least one additional duty as a faculty member (advising a student club, joining a standing committee, and the like).
Qualifications. The successful applicant will have at least a bachelor's degree in history or a related field (for example, ethnic studies, sociology, political science, international studies). A master's degree in history, a related field, or in education will be preferred, and a doctorate in history will be a plus. Significant course work in interdisciplinary studies focusing on the humanities or on the history of a particular region of the world will be of value. Experience in teaching high-school-aged students is preferred, though those whose teaching has focused on advanced middle schoolers or the early college years are also encouraged to apply. Candidates with leadership experience at the departmental or division level, or with potential for and interest in such leadership, will be regarded with especial interest. Familiarity with computers and an interest in technology integration in the history curriculum is essential (PC/Windows platform). References should speak to the candidate's ability to be a dynamic educator with leadership potential; to his/her eagerness and enthusiasm in working effectively with capable young people at this level; and to his or her ability to work harmoniously and competently with adult colleagues.
Salary/Benefits. Lakeside School is committed to attracting and retaining outstanding employees through a compensation plan that compares favorably with those of peer schools both locally and nationwide. Individual salary levels-negotiable depending on education and experience-are very competitive. A full benefits package includes TIAA/CREF retirement and generous medical/dental coverage, and equals the best plans in private industry. Lakeside's down-payment assistance program (available after successful evaluation) supports first-time home purchases in the Puget Sound area.
Application Process. Applicants should call 206/440-2763 to request an application form or download a form from the Lakeside School Web site (www.lakesideschool.org), and should submit this with a resumé and cover letter of interest to Lakeside School Employment, 14050 First Avenue NE, Seattle, Washington, 98125-3099, or electronically to jobs at lakesideschool.org. This position will be open until filled. Lakeside School is an Equal Opportunity Employer seeking to diversify its workplace.
