Professional Opportunity: Upper School Mathematics Teacher 08-09

Lakeside School is an independent coeducational day school offering a broad curriculum in the liberal arts. Founded in 1919, the school enrolls 776 students in grades 5 through 12 from diverse ethnic, racial, religious, and economic backgrounds.

The mission of Lakeside School is to develop in intellectually capable young people the creative minds, healthy bodies, and ethical spirits needed to contribute wisdom, compassion, and leader-ship to a global society. We provide a rigorous, dynamic academic program through which effect-ive educators lead students to take responsibility for learning. We are committed to sustaining a school in which individuals representing diverse cultures and experiences instruct one another in the meaning and value of community and in the joy and importance of lifelong learning.

This will be a full-time regular faculty appointment, starting in mid- toin late August 2008. The position will require standing and sitting, repetitive work (keyboarding), and walking to other parts of campus.

Responsibilities. The Upper School mathematics teacher will join a department of ten teachers and will report to the department head and to the Upper School director. The position's primary responsibility will be instruction of mathematics in 9th through 12th grades. Lakeside's high-school mathematics curriculum spans the range from beginning and intermediate algebra, through geometry, precalculus, and calculus, to advanced math; intensive courses are offered to students who are adept, motivated learners. The school makes a serious effort to provide mathematics courses appropriate to the needs of students and to place students on the basis of their aptitude, achievement, and interests. Depending upon the specific course, a variety of teaching strategies is employed to accommodate differences in ability and learning styles. Currently, all students make extensive use of graphing calculators, Excel, and Geometer's Sketchpad throughout the curriculum. All students have laptops with Internet access. Essential duties for faculty members at Lakeside include (1) classroom instruction; (2) conferences with students, parent, and colleagues; (3) active participation in the work of the department on curriculum development and pedagogy; (4) academic advising for a group of students; and (5) at least one additional duty as a faculty member (advising a student club, joining a standing committee, and the like).

Qualifications. The successful applicant will have at least a bachelor's degree in mathematics or a related field; an advanced degree is a plus. We are particularly interested in teachers with experience teaching algebra, geometry, and/or calculus courses at the high-school level. Expertise with computers (PC/Windows, Excel, Geometer's Sketchpad, CAS) and graphing calculators is also sought. Experience and interest in leadership roles, both departmental and school wide, are additional positive factors. The candidate must be able to work with talented students who vary in ability and learning styles. References should speak to an applicant's ability to be a dynamic educator with leadership potential; to be an effective, supportive mentor for adolescents; and to work effectively and harmoniously with adult colleagues, as the department uses the team approach in teaching multiple sections of a given course.

Salary/Benefits. Lakeside School is committed to attracting and retaining outstanding employees through a compensation plan that compares favorably with those of peer schools both locally and nationwide. Individual salary levels-negotiable depending on education and experience-are very competitive. A full benefits package includes TIAA/CREF retirement and generous medical/dental coverage, and equals the best plans in private industry. Lakeside's down-payment assistance program (available after successful evaluation) supports first-time home purchases in the Puget Sound area.

Application Process. Applicants should call 206/440-2763 to request an application form or download a form from the Lakeside School Web site (www.lakesideschool.org), and should submit this with a resumé and cover letter of interest to Lakeside School Employment, 14050 First Avenue NE, Seattle, Washington, 98125-3099, or electronically to jobs at lakeside school.org. This position will be open until filled. Lakeside School is an Equal Opportunity Employer seeking to diversify its workplace.
