Assistant Professor in TESOL/Bilingual Education

About the Position: The Department of Educational Leadership, Woodring College of Education, invites qualified candidates to apply for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in TESOL/Bilingual Education.  The position will include teaching and advising for the ESL and Bilingual endorsements, participation in TESOL and Woodring curriculum teams, and supervision of field practica. This is an academic year appointment with opportunity for summer employment.

About the Department: The TESOL program offers a  well-recognized TESOL certificate and endorsement program, is initiating a Bilingual endorsement this year, and recently received a five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education to incorporate culturally and linguistically responsive elements in all methodology courses in the teacher education curriculum so all graduates are prepared to work effectively with diverse limited English proficient learners.

Position Responsibilities:
Teach Bilingual Education and TESOL courses to prepare future instructors to teach in  K-12 settings
Align course syllabi with the national, state, and program student learning outcomes
Supervise practicum experiences
Collaborate with TESOL and other Woodring faculty
Sustain a program of scholarship in the field
Participate in service activities benefiting the department, college, university, community, and the profession
Required Qualifications:
Earned doctorate with a focus on Bilingual Education/TESOL (or expected by August 2008)
Initiated a scholarship agenda and have a coherent plan for further research in BE/TESOL
Demonstrated understanding of the relationship between language, literacy, and culture
Successful teaching experience as a practitioner/educator in the K-12 school system
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, including those from educational settings in the community
Knowledge, skills, and abilities to work with marginalized populations

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with bilingual or content-based ESL instruction
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Evidence of successful teaching or training of adult learners
Interest in application of technology in an ESL environment

Academic Emphasis: Bilingual Education (BE) and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

Job Location: Western Washington University, Bellingham, WA 

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications 

Bargaining Union: United Faculty of Western Washington
