The Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program is seeking specific placements
in schools for Uruguayan teachers and administrators who will be in
the United States for three weeks in early February.
Teacher hosting: The Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program seeks Catholic
elementary and middle schools (K-5 or K-8) for hosting a participant
who is from a Catholic school in Uruguay. The participant is
interested in language immersion and bilingual/ESL programs. The host
at the school must be proficient at Spanish and must be able to have
the guest teacher observe school practices with colleagues who can
speak Spanish.
The Fulbright program is also seeking schools for the deaf who would
be interested in hosting a pair of Uruguayan educators, one teacher
and one principal. (The teacher is deaf and is adept at signing; the
principal is not deaf and can interpret from Spanish into sign
language for the teacher.) Host must be proficient at Spanish and must
be able to have the guests observe school practices with colleagues
who can speak Spanish.
Administrator hosting: The Fulbright program is also seeking school
districts that would like to host a pair of Uruguayan administrators
working in the field of elementary education for bilingual, immersion,
or ESL programs. School districts must be willing to arrange a
schedule for these upper level Uruguayan administrators. For example,
the guest administrators might be given the opportunity to experience
an overview of the US primary education system at various levels,
local, district, regional, and in a variety of venues, as well as
general PTA meetings, school board meetings, school staff/faculty
meetings, school organization meetings, after-school activities, lunch
programs, sports activities, special education, fund-raising, and
immersion and ESL programs. Class observation and classroom management
at the elementary level is an important component, but exposure to
different classrooms, as well as different types of elementary schools
in the area is also helpful. They would be interested in
work-shadowing for a day a superintendent or district official who
oversees elementary education. Host must be proficient at Spanish and
must be able to have the guests observe school practices with
colleagues who can speak Spanish.
