Xylophone and rattles: A xylophone (balafon) with 
gourd resonators and rattles weave a joyful gentle 
melody at a harvest ritual in Gambia, Africa. 
Xylophones are tuned wood bars and are beaten with 
sticks and are found in Africa, Central America 
and Southeast Asia. The earliest rattles were made out 
of dried gourds or pods that contained dried seeds. 
Rattles play an important role in the music and magical 
rites of most indigenous cultures of the world.

(1700); the trombone from Germany (1500); cymbals from Turkey; and the side
and bass drum from England (1800s).
