*Theme: YORK COUNTY: A CALL TO COMMUNITY ACTION*
During the past five years, YCCAR has seen the effects of racism in our
community. It is time for York
County to acknowledge the institutional racism that, consciously or
unconsciously, exists. We can not pretend:
racism touches our lives where we live, work, learn, play, and pray. Racist
practices give some residents of
York County advantage or privilege.
Because York County must face its own racism and address this issue of
privilege, YCCAR has invited two
national speakers, who are experts on the topics of racism and privilege.
They will lead a thought provoking
community discussion that York Countians do not want to miss.
Eddie Moore, Jr. is the Director of Diversity at the Bush School, an
independent K-12 school in Seattle.
Dr. Moore is also the Founder/CEO of America & Moore Research and
Consulting, which is a company that
presents training and workshops on equity and justice throughout the United
States. Moore is also founder of
White Privilege Conference. Moore states" Diversity is a complex issue and
can not be solved in one day, by
one person, in one place. It must be the work of the entire community coming
together."
Our second speaker is Tim Wise who comes to York from Nashville,TN. where he
is the Director of the
Association for White Anti-Racist Education (AWARE). Wise lectors across the
country having spoken in
48 states and on more than 400 college campuses. Tim Wise is the author of
several books including
WHITE LIKE ME: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son. Professor Michael
Eric Dyson of the University
of Pennsylvania calls Wise "one of the most brilliant, articulate, and
courageous critics of white privilege in the
nation."
A CALL TO COMMUNITY ACTION; After Dr. Moore and Mr.Wise complete their
keynote remarks, they
will engage the attendees in a dialogue to develop an action plan that will
address "PRIVILEGE" in our
York County Community.
York County Community Against Racism (YCCAR) works to build a community that
understands, appreciates and respects racial, economic, and cultural
diversity. We engage in actions with neighbors, businesses, community and
religious leaders to educate, build relationships, open hearts and change
behaviors.
