Teaching Peace in Texas Schools takes place this year the United
Way's Community Resource Center in Houston on Saturday, October 13th.
Workshops and speakers:
1) Teaching Critical Thinking Skills--Professor William Hardt
2) Nonviolent/ Compassionate Communication--Brenda Hardt and Marilynn
Schwanitz
3) Teaching Empathy with examples in the Math and Science
Curricula--Deanna King
4) Creating a Culture of Peace in the Schools--Judith Hoffhien
5) Language Equality and Dispelling Stereotypes at Age 4--Joan grace
6) Peaceful Vocations: Counter-Recruiting for High School
Students--Kitty Lane, Diane Wood
7) Tim Love--How Power and Oppression Function to Create Violence and
Injustice in Schools
8) Tommie Kinney--LGBT Issues in the Schools
9) John Kelley--Telling the Truth: Empowering Students With History
10) Ivan Espinosa/Alyssa Burgin--Encouraging Student Activism; Giving
students a voice in policy and politics
11)Rosalyn Collier-Susan Ives--Ann Helmke--Working it out: strategies
for elementary-school children to resolve inner and outer conflict
12) David Albert--Teaching against the ongoing backdrop of war; how
to help students understand conflicts in the Middle East
Plenary session keynote speaker: Jan Arnow, author and founder of
Institute for the Intercultural Understanding, in Louisville, Kentucky
and the No More Violence Project. Former Director of Multicultural
Education for the Kentucky Department of Education.
Luncheon speaker: Sister Martha Ann Kirk: Reaching out to the
children of Iraq--a child-to-child connection.
