Theme: "The Legacy of Racism in our Neighborhoods." The conference
will look at the impact of racism on Seattle's neighborhoods,
present-day movements for racial justice and strategies for undoing
racism and uniting our communities.
Highlights include:
A presentation on "Remembering Segregated Seattle and the Civil Rights
Movements that Changed Our City" by James N. Gregory, University of
Washington Professor of History and Director of the Seattle Civil
Rights and Labor History Project
An intergenerational panel discussing "The Road to Racial Justice,"
with Bob Santos, former Executive Director of Inter*Im, Germaine
Covington, former Director Seattle Office for Civil Rights, Carlos
Marentes, Comite Pro-Amnestia General y Justicia Social, K.L. Shannon,
Defender Association/Racial Disparity Project, Delila Leber, Coalition
of Anti-Racist Whites, Athena Zammit, Seattle Young People's Project,
and Phil Lane, Jr., United Indians of All Tribes
A racial justice skills building session led by community organizer
Dustin Washington
The conference will feature an excerpt of the acclaimed documentary
"Banished" and a Q&A with filmmaker Marco Williams. "Banished"
chronicles the history of three southern Counties who committed ethnic
cleansing of their Black communities - burning their homes, lynching
the men and appropriating their land. The film will screen for the
community on Friday, November 2nd at 1pm at the Seattle Art Museum and
7pm at the Rainier Valley Cultural Center ($5 suggested donation) as
part of the Langston Hughes African American Film Festival Underground
Railroad Film Series in partnership with the Seattle Office of Civil
Rights and Seattle Art Museum.
