Advertisement for American Studies Position
September, 2007

The Department of American Studies at the University of Maryland 
Baltimore County, invites applications for a position at the rank of 
Assistant or Associate Professor to begin Fall 2008.

Degree: Ph.D. in American Studies preferred; comparable/related 
interdisciplinary field also considered.

Field:

Specialist in U.S. social diversity and comparative cultures. 
Scholarship and teaching should address international and global border 
crossing, immigration, and issues of identity in ethnic and diaspora 
studies; prefer special emphasis upon Asian, Chicano/Latino, or African 
experiences. In addition, successful applicant should be able to teach 
American Studies core theories and methods.

Experience:
Demonstration of teaching excellence on these topics. For Assistant, 
demonstrated evidence of potential for scholarly productivity; for 
Associate, record of scholarly publication and accomplishment.

The AMST Department at UMBC offers the B.A. degree, and its faculty 
contribute to graduate education through the Ph.D. program in Language, 
Literacy, and Culture. Established along with the university in the late 
1960s, it currently consists of 7 faculty members and has approximately 
100 undergraduate majors. It offers a core curriculum in American 
Studies, along with courses in a number of emphasis areas.

UMBC, located in the Baltimore metropolitan area and drawing students 
from Central Maryland, as well as beyond, takes pride that it is a 
“historically diverse” campus. The American Studies department actively 
seeks an applicant pool fully representative in terms of considerations 
of ethnicity, race, and gender.
