Wonderful! I wanted to pass on a call for papers for an upcoming issue
of Democracy & Education. The theme is "A Pedagogy for Social Justice."
We'd be delighted if you were able to pass this on to any listserves,
websites (for posting), or colleagues you have that might be interested.
The call is pasted below, and is also attached here along with our
submission guidelines. We're happy to consider submissions from
teachers, scholars, and others in the field.

/Democracy & Education/, a journal about the classroom, is requesting
submissions on the following topic:

**CALL FOR MANUSCRIPTS: A Pedagogy for Social Justice**
Deadline: January 15, 2005
Guest editors: Jean Ann Hunt (SUNY Plattsburg) and Jaylynne Hutchinson
(Ohio University)

Teaching for social justice is at the core of democratic education. It
serves as a reminder not only of the inequities and biases that continue
to wear away at the foundation of democratic values, but of the powerful
stories which inspire us to work toward change, to make the world a
better place. When issues of social justice are at the heart of our
classroom teaching, our students benefit from the rich history of people
who didn’t settle for the way things are.” *

The journal /Democracy & Education/ is seeking manuscripts that address
the theme described above or that share experiences of teaching for
social justice within your own classroom. Given the many aspects of a
Pedagogy for Social Justice, manuscripts might address themes captured
in the questions listed below. (Attached, please find the full call for
papers, along with our submission guidelines.)

* Why is teaching for social justice a responsibility of K-12 educators?
* How does one teach “controversial” issues related to social
justice in this age of standardization and high-stakes testing?
What have you done in your classroom?
* How can one overcome potential student, parent, peer or
administrative resistance to teaching for social justice? What
have you done in your school or community?
* What are the ethical concerns and implications related to a
pedagogy for social justice in an increasingly “globalized” world?
* How does teaching for social justice help our students practice
the skills of citizenship and connect them to their community
and/or the larger world beyond their experiences?
* How are the following encompassed within a pedagogy for social
justice: diversity, community, transformation, the arts, media and
popular culture, peer and adult mentoring? What does this mean for
how a teacher lives her/his life?
* Do our teacher-preparation programs adequately prepare future
educators to teach for social justice? If not, why? Could this be
overcome? What have you done to help future educators grow in
their knowledge and practice to teach for social justice?
* How do we remain hopeful and continue to advocate for social
justice in times of fear-mongering and injustice? What actions
have you taken to keep your hope alive?
* What are the implications for our students and our democracy if we
do NOT teach for social justice?
* What is the role of an anti-biased pedagogy in a classroom where
social justice is advocated?

Let these and other questions inspire your imagination!
