The Center for Language Minority Education and Research (CLMER)

The Center for Language Minority Education and Research (CLMER) at the
California State University, Long Beach, seeks an Executive Director
to begin July 1, 2008.
Responsibilities:
*provide leadership for the Center and direct the work of the
professional staff;
*continue to initiate partnerships with ethnically and linguistically
diverse community-based organizations and groups to advance CLMER's
vision and mission;
*promote educational reform for inclusive 21st century learning and
teaching by demonstrating a commitment to advancing social justice and
to the vision, mission, service model, and philosophy of the Center;
*guide the Centers' research agenda;
*obtain funding through grants and contracts that will support and
advance the work of the Center;
*advocate for CLMER priorities and collaborate with the College of
Education and the University in promoting school improvement for all
students; and
*faculty responsibilities, as appropriate, in the assigned department.
Minimum Qualifications:
*Ph.D. or equivalent and a combination of education professional
experience and life experience which will enable the candidate to
advance CLMER's mission;
*recent experience in securing governmental and private funds for
major projects;
*experience in successfully managing large federal and foundation
grants and contract budgets;
*successful research and demonstrated scholarship to positively impact
services and outcomes for target populations of CLMER's work, e.g.,
diverse, traditionally underserved children, youth, and families;
*strong collaborative and participatory management style and leadership skills;
*demonstrated leadership in advocacy for and partnerships with
ethnically and linguistically diverse community-based organizations
and groups;
*successful experience working with local, state, and federal
educational agencies, with a strong focus on language minority
education and teacher preparation, curriculum, and instruction;
*successful K-12 teaching, research, or leadership experience in
school reform and school improvement initiatives;
*multilingual and cross-cultural competency; and
*successful experience working in a multilingual and multicultural environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
*excellent communication and research skills;
*successful experience in building partnerships with legislative
bodies impacting language minority education, e.g., local school
boards, state, and county boards of education;
*familiarity with state and federal laws affecting education;
*experience with global and international educational initiatives;
*experience mentoring and advising diverse student and parent groups
on campus and in the community; and
*demonstrated leadership and advocacy in the areas of language
minority education to promote equity in P-16 curriculum and
instruction.

POSITION: Executive Director of the Center for Language Minority
Education and Research (CLMER) with partial assignment as Project
Director of Grants dependent on future grants. A primary
responsibility of the Executive Director is to obtain funding through
grants and contracts that will support and advance the work of the
Center. The Executive Director is expected to promote educational
reform for inclusive 21st century learning and teaching by
demonstrating a commitment to advancing social justice and to the
vision, mission, service model, and philosophy of the center. CLMER
is a university based consultation, research, and training center
serving schools and communities dedicated to improving education for
multicultural communities.CLMER is dedicated to developing services
and programs and engaging in inquiry and research efforts that are in
line with the Center's priorities of language rights, critical
pedagogy, community learning theory, technology integration,
anti-racist education, and family-school-community collaboration.
EFFECTIVE DATE: July 1, 2008
RANK: Tenure track open (12 month); appointment in an appropriate
department in the College of Education.

SALARY RANGE: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
