The Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) seeks
a full-time director. CARLA is one of the U.S. Department of
Education's Title VI National Language Resource Centers, whose role is
to improve the nation's capacity to teach and learn foreign languages
effectively. CARLA is engaged in a number of interrelated research and
program initiatives focused on second/foreign language teaching,
learning, and assessment. Through an annual summer institute program
and a wide array of international conferences and regional seminars,
CARLA supports the professional development of language teachers.
Additionally, CARLA offers a number of resources to language teachers
including a battery of language proficiency assessments and a working
paper series. The mission of CARLA is to study multilingualism and
multiculturalism, to develop knowledge of second language acquisition,
and to advance the quality of language teaching, learning, and
assessment.
General Duties of the CARLA Director: As the public face of CARLA, the
director will provide leadership by setting priorities and direction
for this interdisciplinary, research-based center, securing and
expanding funding, and fostering collaboration among all CARLA
stakeholders. This is a full-time, annually renewable administrative
position that may include limited teaching and research options
depending upon the needs of CARLA and the background of the
individual. For the successful candidate, exceptional circumstances
may warrant the granting of faculty rank and the possibility of
faculty tenure.
Specific Responsibilities
- Provide overall leadership and vision, and foster the development of
effective team relationships within CARLA.
- Maintain and expand funding sources, lead grant-writing efforts and
gift campaigns, and foster collaborations to pursue funding
opportunities.
- Recruit and support project leaders, Center Coordinator and other
personnel; monitor project and product development; supervise Center
personnel.
- Create and strengthen connections linking CARLA with all relevant
units within the University and the state, and with national and
international researchers, leaders, and institutions engaged in
language education.
- Provide budgetary oversight and decision-making for CARLA resources.
- Maintain effective communication with Principal Investigators of all
CARLA grants.
- Establish and implement a new leadership model in consultation with
CARLA stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. or Ed.D. in a relevant field.
- Demonstrated scholarship and background and experience in language education.
- Knowledge about key national and international issues related to
language and culture education.
- Documented evidence of management ability, organizational and
interpersonal skills, and strong public relations skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated success in writing, procuring, and managing grants.
- Demonstrated interdisciplinary teambuilding success in academic
and/or non-academic settings.
- Demonstrated leadership and professional involvement in language and
culture education.
CARLA has 5 full-time staff members and several affiliated faculty
members from the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Education and
Human Development, and the College of Continuing Education. The
Director of CARLA reports to the Associate Vice-President and Dean of
