I'll see if my colleagues in Early Childhood agree.

Mark,
Yes. Nicely said. In fact, it would be great if whoever is familiar with
children's books could go through the list and mention some of the books
you've found problematic. This is a desperately needed conversation in
relation to "multicultural" children's literature.

>From Children's Literature re Encounter:
"This children's picture book tells about the encounter of the Taino
people with Columbus. The story is told from the point of view of a
small Taino boy frightened by three dream birds who come to him in
sleep. When he wakes, he finds three "great canoes" anchored off the
shores of his island and tries to warn his chief. He is ignored and
the strangers are welcomed, much to everyone's eventual sorrow. Yolen
may believe that she envisioned life through the eyes of a Taino boy,
but the feelings she attributes to him run counter to Taino society.
To explain why the boy is ignored, she repeats five or six times, "I
was but a child." This makes the story gain power, but it is based on
a European, not an Indian model of society. Indian society is built
on mutual respect. Yolen's word choices are another slap in the face.
She talks of how the Indians "gave" their souls, or "took" European
words, as if the victims were to blame. Encounter may have been
well-intentioned, but I wonder why it wasn't reviewed before
publication by an organization familiar with the culture, such as
OYATE. The book is an overly-sentimental, off-kilter story and one
more betrayal to Native people. Its half-truths make it more
insidious than books that have obvious misrepresentations."

TRAVEL AND TEACH: CAMBODIA and THAILAND
Program Dates: July 1 ? 25, 2007
The East-West Center's "Travel and Teach" program offers U.S. teachers
the opportunity to develop meaningful real-life connections to world
cultures, religions, economies, ecologies, and more through
experiential professional learning, enriched by one-on-one
interactions with people in local communities.
The 2007 "Travel and Teach" itinerary provides knowledge-enhanced
immersion experiences in Cambodia and Thailand. The program takes a
multifaceted approach to exploring the incredible diversity of
Southeast Asia, as exemplified by Thailand and Cambodia, while
enabling participants to make "connections" between these two
societies/cultures.
Application deadline is April 15, 2007.
Questions? Applications?

Please forward, display, and publish as appropriate. The AI-DADS flyer
is in MS Publisher format.
Research Study Announcement
Colorado State University
TITLE OF STUDY: American Indian - Dads and Daughters Survey (AI-DADS)
Principal Investigator: Dr. Irene Vernon, 970-491-2642,
IRENE.VERNON at COLOSTATE.EDU
CO-Principal Investigator: Dr. Martin Reinhardt, 303-623-5531,
MARTINR at CAHS.COLOSTATE.EDU
This study is being conducted in partnership between the Interwest
Equity Assistance Center (IEAC) and the Center for Applied Studies in
American Ethnicity (CASAE) at Colorado State University. Our advisory
group for this study is composed of members of the IEAC American Indian
Advisory Council, and Joe Kelly of the Dads and Daughters organization.
We are requesting your assistance in recruiting American Indian fathers,
step-fathers or adoptive-fathers, 18 years or older, of at least one
American Indian daughter to participate in this study by filling out a
paper based, or web-based, copy of the AI-DADS. A recruitment flyer is
attached to this announcement for public posting.
Very little research based data currently exists regarding the
relationships between American Indian fathers, step-fathers, and
adoptive-fathers and their American Indian daughters. The purpose of
this study is to collect information about those relationships and the
data will be compared with results of a 2004 Roper Poll conducted on
behalf of Dads and Daughters organization that focused on fathers in
general.
This study is being conducted both on-site and on-line. The paper based
survey will be administered at various conferences/meetings by the
primary or co-primary investigator. The web-based survey will be
available by clicking on the AI-DADS link at
http://www.colostate.edu/programs/EAC/
All participants are required
to read a consent form and check a box if they agree to allow their
survey to be used in this study.
There are 50 questions that will take an estimated 15-30 minutes to
answer. Participants can begin the survey at any time, and if they do
not complete it, they are able to save it and come back later to finish.
The survey will be available for a period of 30 days once participants
sign-in for the first time. Once they complete the web-based survey and
hit the submit button, the survey will no longer be available. All
surveys must be completed by June 15, 2007 by 12pm Mountain Time.

"What is called education today was, for American Indians, a journey for
learning to be fully human. Learning about the nature of the spirit in
relationship to community and the environment was considered central to
learning the full meaning of life" (Cajete, 1994).
