No Consumer Left Behind: Globalization, Classism,
and the Corporatization of U.S. Schools
Thursday, March 15, 2007
3:45-5:45
Hamline University, St. Paul, MN
Program Description:
Decades of research from scholar-activists such as Jonathan Kozol has
revealed the myriad ways in which the U.S. education system recycles
socioeconomic oppression including tracking and inequitable funding. But
little attention has been paid to the relationship between these forms of
classism and the growing privatization of schooling through corporate-school
partnerships, voucher programs, corporation-driven standardization, and No
Child Left Behind, particularly in a context of globalization. How are U.S.
schools preparing children to participate in a global and exploitative
consumer culture? What are the local, national, and global implications of
the corporatization of U.S. schools? Panelists will unpack these questions
and discuss strategies for encouraging teachers and students to think
critically about globalization, classism, and the corporatization of
schools.
