HUMAN RIGHTS AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS DEPARTMENT

Position:       Deputy Director

                Salary:         $125,056.08



DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The deputy director will work under the direction of the department
director to oversee, coordinate and carryout department sponsored
activities on a variety of issues associated with human rights and
community relations, women's rights and civil rights.

The deputy director will work with AFT affiliates to develop
effective, local human rights and community relations committees as
well as prepare materials and maintain contacts and relationships with
other organizations, coalitions, the civil rights community and the
faith-based community.  The deputy director will represent the AFT's
views to various groups as well as provide guidance and technical
assistance to AFT affiliates on these matters.

The deputy director will have responsibility to work with department
staff to provide support for AFT standing committees on civil and
human rights and women's rights, the AFT/NEA/NAACP partnership group,
the Hispanic advisory group, the Asian advisory group, and the gay and
lesbian advisory group for which the department has responsibility.

QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will possess expertise and experience in
coalition building and community organizing working. Experience with
AFT affiliates is a plus.  The candidate must be able to communicate
clearly in writing, as well as verbally, about complicated issues.  An
advanced degree in a related area is desired.
