I invite all NAME members and encourage others to become involved in the
first annual La Mura Video Festival.

La (Spanish for Œthe¹)
Mura (Japanese for Œvillage¹)

La Mura is reminiscent of the word Œlove¹ in French (amour) and Spanish
Œamor¹.
La Mura also conjures up the earliest filmmakers, The Lumiere brothers in
the late 1800s.

Festival Mission:
In conjunction with NAME, I created the La Mura Video Festival in order to
provide personal voices to culturally diverse communities all over the US,
through video storytelling. In keeping with the old African proverb, ³Only
when lions have historians will hunters cease being heroes², this festival
celebrates America¹s stories about race, culture, ethnicity, gender,
poverty, religion and immigration from the point of view of young video
producers.

The goals of the video festival:
· Celebrate, respect, accept and understand human cultural diversity
· Promote the understanding of unique cultural and ethnic heritage
· Help eliminate racism and discrimination in society
· Achieve social, political, economic, and educational equity

Once a year, at the National Association for Multicultural Education
conference, La Mura Video Festival will showcase the winners of this
competition. We will award six winning videos, and an overall winner.

Videos will be judged by a panel of multicultural educators and video/TV
industry professionals.

Your Mission:
As a team, produce a short documentary or fiction film that tells a story
about your community with respect to race, ethnicity, gender, poverty,
religion, and/or immigration. The story should emphasize strength, honor,
conviction, love and commitment that exemplifies who you are as a community.
The story can be about a person who represents a group, or a group that
represents and idea, practice, struggle, or anything that defines a culture.
For example, ask the question: ³What is especially important about our
culture that would be of interest to the world?²

Please communicate with your school and community about this great
opportunity to bring to the world significant stories about what is unique
about our cultures, and what really unites us.

³The truth is only as powerful as your voice.²
